The SEC vs Ripple legal case which began in 2020 was one of the things that hampered the development of XRP. The SEC accused XRP of being an unregistered security, as well as accusing Ripple of raising $1.3 billion through an ICO in 2013. 

However, a court ruling on July 13, 2023 ruled that XRP is not a security if sold on a public exchange. Only transactions with institutional investors can be categorized as securities.  

In October 2023, the SEC dropped its charges against Ripple founders Brad Garlinghouse and Chris Larsen. Even though the SEC has filed an appeal, the chances of continuing the case are thought to be slim. 

Moreover, with the change of leadership at the SEC in January 2025. This is also one of the reasons why many analysts predict that the price of XRP will rise in 2025.

So far, four large companies, namely 21Shares, Bitwise, Canary Capital, and WisdomTree, have submitted XRP ETF applications.

According to data from Polymarket, the potential approval of an XRP ETF is 71%. This figure has jumped significantly in the last few days, which signals a change in market sentiment towards XRP.

The ETF approval process typically takes up to 240 days. With a more crypto-friendly US administration and the possibility of a new, pro-crypto SEC chairman, an XRP ETF looks like it could potentially be approved in 2025.

Apart from that, the reason why analysts predict XRP prices will rise in 2025 is the discourse on establishing a strategic XRP reserve. 

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse hinted that XRP might become part of a strategic crypto asset reserve, alongside Bitcoin.
