Base Launches Basenames, a Blockchain Identity System Inspired by ENS

Bittime - Base launched its newest product, Basenames, at the BaseCamp summit. This product is inspired by the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) which is designed to make blockchain addresses, which are usually a combination of numbers and letters, easier to read by humans.  

What is Basenames?

Basenames allows users to convert blockchain addresses to more readable names, similar to ENS which is based on Ethereum.

With Basenames, users can have addresses such as “vitalik.eth” or “tom.base.eth,” which are easier to remember compared to the long alphanumeric addresses commonly used in blockchain.

This product not only makes transactions easier for users, but also functions as an on-chain identity that can be used to display user skills and credentials. 

Basenames can be integrated with various wallets, such as MetaMask, Rainbow, and Coinbase Wallet, allowing users to connect with the broader blockchain community.

Basenames Vision

Thomas Vieira, Base Product Manager, stated that Basenames aims to be a "connective tissue" that allows developers to collaborate more closely with other users. 

Vieira also added that Basenames can serve as an “on-chain resume,” where a user's skills and experience can be backed up with verifiable blockchain data.

Apart from converting blockchain addresses into easy-to-read names, Basenames also provides various additional features that are useful for users. Among these is the ability to search for other Basenames addresses, customize profiles by adding bios, social media handles, as well as relevant skills.

Basenames will first be available to those attending BaseCamp events. Meanwhile, a public launch is planned in the next few weeks.
