What is Utility?

Utility can be illustrated with a simple example. Imagine you go to a restaurant and order your favorite food. The satisfaction you feel after enjoying the food is a form of utility.

However, if you order the same meal another day, your experience may be different. This illustrates how utility can change over time or situations.

Utility is a measure of satisfaction or pleasure obtained from consuming a good or service. The greater a person's desire for the good, the higher the level of utility he or she obtains. Because utility is subjective, each individual may perceive different levels of utility from the same good.

Utility Functions

The utility function is to measure the level of benefit or satisfaction obtained by consumers when using a product or service. From this measurement, companies can understand how consumers value their products and can adjust marketing strategies or product development accordingly.

High utility value indicates that consumers are very satisfied with the product, which can ultimately increase the value of the company itself.

Types of Utilities

Utilities can be divided into several types, including:

  1. Total Utility (UT) : Is the total amount of satisfaction that consumers obtain from consuming a number of goods or services.

    • Formula : UT = U1 + U2 + U3 +... + Un.

  2. Marginal Utility (MV) : The additional satisfaction obtained from consuming one additional unit of a good or service.

    • Formula : UM = ΔUT/ΔQ (change in total utility divided by change in quantity of consumption).

  3. Average Utility (UR) : Total satisfaction divided by the number of units consumed.

    • Formula : UR = UT/n (where n is the number of units consumed).

In addition, in economics, there are other types of utilities such as:

  • Form Utility : Refers to the physical form of the product that meets consumer needs.

  • Place Utility : Relates to the availability of products or services in locations that are easily accessible to consumers.

  • Time Utility : Refers to the availability of goods or services at the right time for consumers.

  • Ownership Utility : The benefits consumers obtain from owning and using the product.

Examples of Economic Utility

To understand the concept of utility more clearly, let's look at the following example. Suppose you are considering buying a motorcycle and there are two options with almost the same features.

However, the first bike has better safety features, even though it costs Rp10 million more. If you choose the second bike because it is cheaper, even though it is slightly less safe, you have made a decision based on the utility gained from the lower price.

Conclusion: Utility in Economics

Utility in economics is a deep concept that describes the satisfaction or benefit that consumers derive from a product or service. Hopefully this explanation provides a better understanding of how utility functions in economic theory.
