In recent months, many crypto investors have been wondering whether altcoin season has begun or is over. 

Please note, altcoin season is a period when most altcoins outperform Bitcoin (BTC) in terms of price growth. However, according to Changpeng Zhao (CZ), founder of Binance, there are currently no signs of altcoin season.

In his post on the X platform, CZ referred to CoinMarketCap's (CMC) "Altcoin Season Index". This index shows that of the top 100 altcoins, only 14 managed to outperform Bitcoin in the last three months. 

This figure is far from the 75% threshold that is considered an indicator of altcoin season.

CZ's Opinion on Altcoin Season

CZ highlighted that the ranking system of the CMC is quite strict. According to him, a score of 50 could be a more realistic reference point for stating that altcoin season has arrived. 

However, with the current score only reaching 14/100, he emphasized that the altcoin season has not yet happened.

Several altcoins have managed to outperform Bitcoin. Some of these altcoins are Monero (XMR), Hyperliquid (HYPE), Pi (PI), Mantra (OM), Berachain (BERA), and Trump-themed token (TRUMP). 

However, most altcoins actually experienced a significant decline. For example, Solana (SOL) and SUI are down around 37% to 41% in the last three months. 

Meanwhile, several meme coins such as Dogwifhat (WIF), PEPE, FLOKI, and BONK experienced declines of up to 70%-80%.

Altcoin Season According to Analysts

Apart from CZ, several crypto analysts also provide their views on the condition of altcoins. 

Renowned analyst Michaël van de Poppe noted that despite momentary gains in some altcoins, the overall performance remains negative when viewed over a longer time frame.

Meanwhile, Altcoin Sherpa, a crypto trader and analyst, said that altcoins are currently in the same condition or even worse than the market correction in the summer of 2024. 

He added that although some altcoins experienced price bounces last August, there are currently no major factors like the "Trump Pump" that could drive price spikes significantly.

However, CryptoQuant CEO, Ki Young Ju, has a different view. He believes that altcoin season has begun, but this time the pattern is different from previous cycles. 

According to him, Bitcoin's dominance is no longer the only determining factor. Instead, trading volume is the key metric in this cycle. He also added that only altcoins with strong fundamentals will survive and experience growth.

Is Altcoin Season Over?

By looking at current market conditions, it can be concluded that altcoin season has not yet occurred. Altcoins are still under pressure and have not been able to show dominance over Bitcoin in the long term. 

However, it is possible that the "chop period" or consolidation phase is still underway before the altcoin experiences a significant surge.

Investors are advised to remain cautious and conduct in-depth analysis before investing in altcoins. Although some altcoins may show good performance, the overall market is still in the adjustment stage and has not yet entered the real altcoin season.
