Changpeng Zhao (CZ) to be Released on September 29, 2024

Changpeng Zhao's Prison Sentence

On April 30, US District Judge Richard Jones sentenced Changpeng Zhao to four months in prison. The judge recommended that CZ be placed in Seatac Prison, a federal detention center with administrative security. 

However, CZ's legal team managed to delay his detention until the end of May and transfer him to FCI Lompoc II, a low-security federal prison located north of Los Angeles.

CZ Detention Delay

Initially, many believed that CZ was immediately imprisoned after the judge's ruling on April 30, meaning he should have been released on August 30. However, CZ's attorneys from the renowned law firms of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, Davis Wright Tremaine, and Latham & Watkins worked hard to ensure CZ had several additional weeks of freedom before entering prison.

As of May 16, CZ still had not entered the custody of the US Bureau of Prisons. It wasn't until a few days later that CZ, along with his legal team, probation officer, and pre-trial services, set a prison date for the end of May.

Detention Location at FCI Lompoc II

A recent check of the Bureau of Prisons database shows that CZ is not at Seatac Prison, but rather at Federal Correctional Institution Lompoc II, a low-security federal prison three hours north of Los Angeles. This indicates a change in detention location that may be more profitable for CZ.

Unless there is a change in CZ's situation, he will not leave FCI Lompoc II on August 30. Instead, the currently scheduled release date is September 29. 

The Fifth Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees due process of law for all persons within the US, including foreign nationals like CZ. These guarantees include admission dates that are nearly one month after the verdict, low-security facilities, and initial delays during court proceedings.
