TON Gaming Head Reveals the Future of Hamster Kombat by Comparing Notcoin
2024-08-08Bittime - In 2024, the gaming ecosystem on the Open Network (TON) has become one of the interesting case studies in the crypto world. TON's Head of Games also discussed the future of Hamster Kombat and compared it to Notcoin.
The growth of the gaming ecosystem on the TON blockchain has occurred rapidly in recent months. This is thanks to the presence of a series of click games that allow players to earn token rewards, which can be accessed by anyone with the Telegram messaging application.
The Future of TON Games
Inal Kardan, Head of Games from the TON Foundation, stated that last December, only around 1% of Telegram's monthly active users played games on the application.
"I once said that there should be at least 10% to 12% of users playing games like on other social media, or even 30% like on WeChat," said Kardan, quoted from The Block.
"Now about 20% of Telegram users play at least one game per month. So, the growth has increased 20 times."
Telegram, which recently announced it has 950 million users worldwide, is home to several mini-games that utilize the TON blockchain, which has close ties to the messaging app's creators.
Can the popularity of these games be turned into a sustainable business in the long term or fuel growth across the blockchain space?
Titles like Notcoin and Hamster Kombat seem to be successful in attracting newcomers to the world of crypto with free games that offer the chance to earn financial rewards.
Today, most games are focused on building their communities and increasing user engagement, according to Kardan.
"The monetization model of all these games is not about in-app purchases, but about traffic. They all monetize traffic in different ways," said Kardan.

"You can't monetize traffic the same way they do now after a token generation event (TGE). So after TGE, their model has to change."
Apart from Hamster Kombat, other titles such as Catizen and Yescoin are also likely to start token airdrops in the near future.
The Role of Notcoin in the TON Ecosystem
To date, Notcoin is the only major title on Telegram to show how a tap-to-earn game with millions of users can, or should, conduct a massive token airdrop (TGE) with the goal of keeping players engaged with its ecosystem.
After launching in January, the Notcoin team kicked off a $1 billion token airdrop in May when the project airdropped 80 billion NOT tokens.
The game's NOT token currently has a market cap of $1.1 billion, according to The Block's pricing page. Last week, the creator of Notcoin launched another game on Telegram to expand its ecosystem.
"They launched companion games, marketing campaigns, and even acceleration programs," Kardan said of Notcoin.
"It's about finding ways to keep your existing audience engaged. You already have millions of users, and you have to offer them something interesting."
Hamster Kombat Will Follow Notcoin?
How Hamster Kombat will follow in Notcoin's footsteps remains to be seen. However, the game is attracting significant interest online as the project claims to have more than 300 million users.

The team behind this title seems to be experts at convincing people to follow, join, and subscribe to Hamster Kombat's social channels on X, YouTube, and Telegram.
While it's unclear how many of Hamster Kombat's users are actual or simply bots, the game's founders told The Block last month that they plan to address the issue before the game's token launch.
"Nobody knows what the percentage of bots is. We don't know either," Kardan said.
"Even the Telegram team doesn't know because many people have multiple Telegram accounts."
Hamster Kombat originally planned to launch TGE last month, but last week said that because it was planning the "largest airdrop in crypto history," the technical challenges of the airdrop made it "impossible to predict" when the event would occur.
When TGE occurred, the project's developers said 60% of its token airdrop would be dedicated to players, according to a whitepaper released last week.
Kardan is optimistic about Hamster Kombat's chances of surviving after TGE and building a sustainable gaming ecosystem. "They already have a huge audience," he said.
"They can try to convert those users into players of new games, and if those new games are mid-core games where people are more likely to spend money on in-app purchases, they'll have a really good revenue stream."
The Future of Gaming on Telegram
Popular mid-core game on mobile devices. Games classified as "mid-core" tend to be more complex and strategy-based than casual games like Hamster Kombat and Notcoin, but also do not require the same level of focus as most console games.
Mid-core gaming ecosystems can generate significant revenue from in-app purchases as players seek to level up or improve their gaming experience.
Kardan sees mid-core games playing a big role in the maturation of gaming on the TON and Telegram blockchains.
"There is a game called Gatto; it is a mid-core game on Telegram like Tamagotchi, where you have your own pets, and you have to play with them. We saw that they started to get a lot of users, and they also had good revenues, he said.
"We expect more games like Gatto to launch on TON and Telegram in the next six months."
