The Beginning of the Bitcoin Logo

When Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin in 2009, the first logo used was not the “₿” symbol we see today.

The Bitcoin logo was originally a gold coin with the initials “BC” in the middle. This design reflects the concept of Bitcoin as digital gold, namely an asset that can store value in the long term.

However, on February 24, 2010, Satoshi introduced a new version, inspired by the currency symbols of the US Dollar and Thai Baht. The letters “BC” in the center of the gold coin were replaced with the symbol “₿” which has two vertical lines at the top and bottom.

Bitcoin Logo Now

Because Bitcoin is a decentralized system, the community had a big role in its development, including in the design of the logo.

One of the community members known by name Bitboy (not YouTuber BitBoy Crypto) proposed major changes to the Bitcoin logo.

On 1 November 2010, Bitboy released a new design which became the version of the Bitcoin logo we know today. The main changes made are as follows.

1. Removed the gold coin element and replaced it with flat orange circle.

2. Tilt the “₿” symbol by 14 degrees clockwise to make it look more dynamic.

This design received a warm welcome from the Bitcoin community and has since become the official logo used to this day.

Bitcoin Logo Meaning

The Bitcoin logo is not just an image, it also has many symbolic elements that show the philosophy and technology behind Bitcoin.

1. Orange Circle: The orange color was chosen because it is striking, easy to recognize, and suitable for use in various media, both digital and print. The circle shape also symbolizes eternity, continuity, and openness, which fits the principle of Bitcoin as an infinite global financial system.

2. Letter “₿” with Two Vertical Lines: This line is similar to the currency symbols of the US dollar ($) and Thai baht (฿). However, in the Bitcoin logo, these lines does not penetrate the letter B completely, which shows Bitcoin's differences from traditional financial systems.

3. 14 Degree Slope: The Bitboy design tilts the “₿” symbol 14 degrees to the right. This number is the result of mathematical calculations that are related to the blockchain concept and the number eight (8), which often appears in the geometry of this logo.

Currently, the symbol “₿” can be found in various places, starting from crypto exchanges, Bitcoin ATMs, to clothing and merchandise. Even people who don't understand crypto often recognize this logo as something related to digital assets.

Although some members of the community continued to create variations of the Bitcoin logo, the Bitboy design remained the official version used for over 12 years.
