Pavel Durov Promises to Increase Monitoring of Criminal Activities on Telegram

Illegal Activities on the Telegram Platform

The above statement is a response to Durov's arrest in France, which was triggered by allegations that Telegram was used for various illegal activities such as drug trafficking, organized fraud and the distribution of illegal content including child pornography. 

However, Durov firmly rejected these accusations. He explains that Telegram actively removes millions of dangerous posts and channels every day. 

Even so, he admitted that the increasing number of Telegram users, which has now reached 950 million, has created greater opportunities for carrying out illegal activities on the Telegram platform.

Telegram is Difficult to Contact

On August 25, 2024, Pavel Durov was arrested upon arrival at Paris–Le Bourget Airport, France. The French Government claims that Durov's company was not responsive enough in addressing this issue, and did not respond properly to inquiries from the relevant authorities. 

Through posts on his personal Telegram channel, Durov explained that the accusation that Telegram was difficult to contact was wrong. He stated that access to his company was quite easy, namely through a search on Google, with the keywords "Telegram EU address for law enforcement".

According to Durov, Telegram has official representatives in the European Union who regularly receive and respond to requests from local authorities.

Pavel Durov Criticism of French Law

Pavel Durov also criticized the French government's legal steps to target himself personally. Usually, according to Durov, when a country is dissatisfied with internet services, that country will take legal action against the company providing the service. 

However, in this case, the French government actually sued Telegram's CEO for actions carried out by third parties on the platform. Durov believes that this is wrong, especially because the law used comes from the pre-smartphone era, so it is not relevant to the current context. 

According to him, burdening CEOs with responsibility for crimes committed by other people on their platforms is an inappropriate step. He also warned that such actions would only stifle innovation.
