In May 2021, reports emerged of a significant data leak involving approximately 17 gigabytes of personal information from approximately 10,000 Vietnamese citizens. The leaked data includes identity card details, home addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses.

The person responsible for the leak claimed that the data came from Pi Network. 

However, the project denies these allegations. According to them, the KYC process was carried out by a third-party service, Yoti, which also stated that Vietnamese identity cards are not stored on their servers.

“Pi Network or third-party KYC providers have nothing to do with the recent Vietnam national identity card data leak. Pi Network never requests or collects such data,” the project wrote in 2021.

Furthermore, an internal investigation by Pi Network found no evidence of data leakage on their part.

Pi Network Facts: Pyramid Scheme or MLM?

Pi Network has also faced intense scrutiny in China with accusations that it operates as a pyramid or multi-level marketing (MLM) scheme. The platform uses a referral-based system where users can increase their mining rate by inviting others.

In July 2023, the Public Security Bureau of Hengyang City, Hunan Province, stated that Pi Coin was a scam. The bureau highlighted that Pi Network relies on a hierarchical invitation mechanism that forms layers of participants through which recruiters profit from bringing in new members.

“Pi Network has nothing to do with real projects and will soon be a rug pull,” wrote MASTR analysts on X (formerly Twitter). 

This model reflects the characteristics of pyramid schemes that are illegal under Chinese law. Some industry leaders such as Colin Wu and AB Kuai Dong have warned about the legal risks associated with involvement in Pi Network in China.

Pi Network's Response to Pyramid Scheme or MLM Allegations

In response to these allegations, Pi Network has imposed restrictions on trading of Pi coins in certain regions, including mainland China. Some exchanges such as OKX have confirmed that Pi Network is requesting an isolated listing method.
