Vitalik Buterin Wants Ethereum to Process 100,000 Transactions per Second!
2024-10-21Bittime - Ethereum is making a big splash again. One of its founders, Vitalik Buterin, revealed ambitious plans to increase Ethereum's capabilities to 100,000 transactions per second (TPS).
This move is expected to bring significant changes in network performance, especially through a development strategy focused on a “rollup-centric roadmap.” What's the strategy? Check out the review in this article!
Improving Ethereum Scalability with “The Surge”
Ethereum's new stage of development, called “The Surge,” is designed to address one of blockchain's biggest challenges: scalability. The goal is to expand transaction capacity without compromising Ethereum's two main principles—decentralization and security.
In this plan, Ethereum seeks to maintain the strength of the basic network (Layer 1), but still exploit the potential of Layer 2 to achieve optimal performance.
According to Buterin, a rollup-based approach, which combines sharding technology with Layer 2 protocols, is the key to increasing network capacity. Although promising, he also admits that this path is not free from challenges.
"Our task is to realize this rollup-centric roadmap and overcome emerging challenges, while maintaining the power and decentralization of Layer 1 Ethereum," said Buterin.

Focus on Data Availability for Fast Transactions on Ethereum
One of the main ways to drive transaction speed is through data availability sampling. This technique allows nodes to verify data without having to download or store all the information.
If the network can achieve a bandwidth of 16 MB per slot—compared to the current capacity of 375 kB per slot—Ethereum has the potential to reach 58,000 TPS in the mid-stage.
However, Buterin warned that these speeds may still not be enough to meet the needs of high-volume applications. Examples include digital payments or decentralized social media platforms.
For this reason, he recommends additional solutions such as Plasma. This technology processes data off-chain (off-chain) and only records important information on the blockchain, so costs are lower and transactions can be processed faster.
Gas Limit and Improvements in Layer 1
In addition to focusing on Layer 2 solutions, Buterin highlighted the importance of direct improvements at Layer 1, particularly regarding gas boundary management (gas limit). By increasing the gas limit, the number of transactions in the base layer can increase, but there is a risk that the network becomes too centralized.
To overcome this, Buterin proposed an “effective” gas limit strategy that could expand Layer 1 capacity without sacrificing decentralization. One way is to use different fee structures based on transaction type or adopt a more efficient code format such as EOF (Ethereum Object Format).
Ethereum's Evolutionary Steps into the Future
In his latest blog, Buterin also touched on other technical issues, including block finalization time and the minimum requirement of 32 ETH for validators. He believes that comprehensive improvements in these various aspects will lead Ethereum to become a more scalable, secure platform, while maintaining its decentralized nature.
Buterin is optimistic that this roadmap will take Ethereum to a new level of high performance and strong security. With a target of reaching 100,000 TPS, Ethereum seeks to become a blockchain infrastructure capable of meeting the needs of various future applications, from micropayments to decentralized social media.

Ethereum's New Direction: Speed and Security Go Hand in Hand
With this ambitious roadmap, Ethereum shows its determination to develop into a blockchain network that is ready to face the challenges of the times. This plan is not just about increasing TPS numbers, but also about striking a balance between high performance and the basic principles of decentralization and security.
This move marks a new era in the evolution of blockchain technology, where Ethereum is committed to remaining relevant amidst the ever-evolving needs of users and applications.
Can Ethereum realize its vision and become a network with 100,000 TPS? Let's wait, but what is certain is that Vitalik Buterin and his team are paving the way towards a faster, safer and more efficient blockchain future.
